Preeya K. Gupta, MD
Leadership Preeya K. Gupta, MD Chief Medical Advisor Preeya K. Gupta, MD, is the Managing Director of Triangle Eye Consultants in Raleigh, NC and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Gupta previously served on the faculty at Duke University Eye Center as a Tenured Associate Professor of Ophthalmology from 2011-2021. Dr Gupta earned her medical degree at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She fulfilled her residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina, where she earned the K. Alexander Dastgheib Surgical Excellence Award, and then completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants in Minneapolis. Dr Gupta has authored many articles in the peer-reviewed literature and serves as an invited reviewer to journals such as Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Journal of Refractive Surgery. She has also written several book chapters about corneal disease and ophthalmic surgery, as well as served as an editor of the well-known series, Curbside Consultation in Cataract Surgery. She also holds several editorial board positions including the ONE Network of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery Multimedia Board, and BCSC Refractive Surgery Committee Board. Dr. Gupta serves as an elected member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Cornea clinical committee, and is also the President of the Vanguard Ophthalmology Society. She has given presentations both nationally and internationally, including invited lectures, national meeting presentations and education of residents and fellows. Dr Gupta has been awarded the National Millennial Eye Outstanding Female in Ophthalmology Award and has received the AAO Achievement Award. Paul Karpecki, OD
Leadership Paul Karpecki, OD Paul M. Karpecki, OD, FAAO, received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University and completed a fellowship in medical cornea and refractive surgery in Kansas City in affiliation with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, now Salus University. He currently serves as Clinical Director, Advanced Ocular Surface Disease at Kentucky Eye Institute in Lexington KY. Dr. Karpecki was appointed to the Delphi International Society at Wilmer-Johns Hopkins, which included the top 25 dry eye experts in the world and the National Eye Institute’s Dry Eye Committee to provide insights around dry eye and women. He also co-chaired the Dry Eye Summit for the profession, was a director in the CJO Optometric Dry Eye Guidelines for EyeCare, was recently selected for the DEWS II Diagnostic subcommittee and most recently appointed co-chair of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Symposium in 2016 taking place in Montpellier, France. He has over two decades experience in running some of the largest dedicated dry eye clinics in the United States. A noted educator and author, Dr. Karpecki has provided over 1000 lectures at various meetings covering 4 continents. He has also authored over 1000 papers in journals, book chapters, clinical eblasts and newsletters. He has previously served the following roles: President of the Optometric Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Society, Chairman of the AOA Topical Interest Group in Refractive Surgery, Co-Chair of the Integrated Eyecare delivery task force for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Chair of the Kentucky Education Committee, Chair of the American Optometric Association Continuing Education Committee, the AOA Congress Committee and Vice President of the Ocular Surface Society of Optometry. He currently serves as the Chief Clinical Editor for Review of Optometry, the most read journal in the profession, is director of clinical content and Chairs the New Technology and Treatment Conferences. He is also on the board for the charitable organization Optometry Giving Sight. He is most proud of his faith, his wife Chandria and his three children including twin girls and a boy. Marguerite B. McDonald, MD
Marguerite B. McDonald, MD, FACS Dr. McDonald, born in Chicago, Illinois, received her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1976, followed by an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital and ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital/Cornell, both in New York City. She finished her training in 1981 after a fellowship in corneal and external diseases with Dr. Herbert E. Kaufman at the LSU Medical School in New Orleans. From 1981 Dr. McDonald held tenure at LSU Medical School and became Full Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of the Corneal Service, and Chairman of Promotions and Tenure before she established the Southern Vision Institute in New Orleans in 1994. She joined the Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island in New York in 2006. Currently, she is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at New York University in Manhattan and a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans. She is a staff physician at Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital; Island Eye Surgicenter in Westbury, NY; and Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, NY. She has been active in research having been PI on several NEI R01 research grants. She was instrumental in the development of several refractive surgical procedures including epikeratophakia, synthetic keratophakia, epi-LASIK, and conductive keratoplasty (CK). Her current research continues to focus on refractive surgery and dry eye treatments. For her pioneering work in refractive surgery that also included development and performance of the first excimer laser procedure in patients, she has received over 90 professional recognition awards including the ISRK Lans Distinguished Refractive Surgeon Lecture, the ISRK/AAO Barraquer Lecture, the AAO Whitney Sampson Lecture, the AAO Binkhorst Lecture, the ASCRS Steinert Lecture, induction into the ASCRS Hall of Fame, the 2023 AECOS Visionary Award, and the 2024 IIIC Jan Worst Medal Lecture. She serves on numerous Editorial Boards of clinical and scientific journals and is an active member of multiple national and international professional societies that have accorded recognition including: Honorary President, Founding Member, International Association of Women Eye Surgeons; President, Association of Women Eye Surgeons; President, ASCRS; President, ISRS/AAO; and President, International Society for Contact Lens Research. She has over 1,800 publications and a number of patents in the fields of cornea and refractive surgery. Dr. McDonald lives in Port Washington, NY, with her husband. Vance Thompson, MD
Leadership Vance Thompson, MD Vance Thompson, MD is an internationally recognized specialist in refractive cornea, phakic IOL and lens surgery. He is the Founder of Vance Thompson Vision Sioux Falls, SD and the Director of Refractive Surgery. Vance Thompson Vision has grown to serve the mid and mountain west with seven locations. Dr. Thompson also serves as a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sanford USD School of Medicine. As a leading international researcher he has played a key role in the development of the most advanced technologies and techniques for both laser and implant vision correction. He has served as the medical monitor lead or principal investigator in over 100 clinical research trials (over 90 FDA monitored) studying laser and implant surgery. In addition, Dr. Thompson has published numerous papers and book chapters and is co-author of the textbook Refractive Surgery. Elizabeth Yeu, MD
Leadership Elizabeth Yeu, MD Dr. Yeu is the current President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS, 2023-4). She is a partner at Virginia Eye Consultants, having joined in 2013, and also serves as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. Dr. Yeu is fellowship-trained in Cornea, Anterior Segment and Refractive surgery from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA (2007–8), where she served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology (2008-13). Dr Yeu has authored hundreds of publications and has similarly delivered hundreds of invited lectures, internationally recognized in her expert areas of refractive cataract surgery, complex lens-based surgeries, and ocular surface disease management. For fun, she “edu-tains” by co-hosting a podcast/webcast series known as Ophthalmology Quicksand Chronicles. Dr. Yeu currently serves as the Chief Medical Advisor for Tarsus Pharmaceuticals.
